CODES OF GENDER
Recognizing someone, as male or female, is fundamental to our ability to interact with them. The difference between sex and gender has already been tackled in this blog, as well as the third-world genders. A problem to these genders is that becoming an androgyny is hard, it is hard to socialize with others without them judging you first.
We must have in our knowledge that distinction of two sex and two gender is a socially created only, not a natural. Gender codes become the medium on communicating and on distinguishing genders.
Today, advertisements and media have impacts on gender, as it becomes the way of communication to everyone. It shows how a woman portray softness and delicateness, and on how men portray power and control all through advertisements on magazines and etc, it also shows how men and women in there seem 'normal'.
With the advertisements, it sparked the social idea that femininity, naturally a female sexuality, represents the codes of submissive, powerless, and dependent. And when masculinity, naturally a male sexuality, represents the codes of being strong, assertive, and bold. Advertisements make all of those seem 'normal', when it is really not.
There are a lot of gender codes shown through different advertisements, like men's and women's posture, touch, etc, that expresses what a female is and a male is capable of. There are a lot of codes that is created by the society that becomes the communication to genders and to sexuality, codes portrays roles. So now, when we see men crying or doing actions that portrays that of a woman we would think that it is weird mainly because of how the society has made us see what a 'normal' men and women does. and it is not a natural thing. We must know that these contributes to gender stereotyping, we must know that male and female are equal.
