GENDER STEREOTYPING

Is it really necessary?

Gender stereotypes are preconceived ideas whereby females and males are arbitrarily assigned characteristics and roles determined and limited by their gender. - Gender equality commission of the council of Europe

Now let me ask you all again, is it necessary? Gender stereotyping can limit the development of the natural talents and abilities of males and females, as well as their education and professional experiences and life opportunities. Gender stereotyping can hold back the advancement of men and women. For example, traditionally female stereotype role is to marry and have children, being loving, caring, compassionate, and nurturing. Male stereotype role is to be the financial provider, assertive, competitive, independent, and holds his emotions. These sorts of stereotypes can hinder personal and professional growth.

Gender stereotyping is passed from one generation to the next, could be through mouth-to-mouth socialization, from parents, teachers, peers, and the media. Until today, gender stereotyping is still present. But we can minimize stereotyping once we know what harmful effects it give to individuals.
