GENDER STEREOTYPING IN MEDIA

Media plays a large role in creating social norms because various forms of media are almost present everywhere in current culture. Gender roles and stereotyping exist solely because society as a whole chooses to accept them and are perpetuated by media.

On young children, gender stereotyping is being pushed through various types of media, like on advertisements, television movies, and on social media. Television is the most pervasive form of media, means that viewers must carefully examine the content of the programs they choose to watch.

Actually, nothing is wrong with accepting gender roles. It is only a matter of personal choice on what you want to be or what you want to do as your daily routine. It should not be something that you feel that the society or your tradition is forcing you to do, then it is not wrong at all. The only problem with gender stereotyping is that it can cross a line and become oppressive and media is helping that grow. However, media can bring societal change. Regardless of this, gender stereotyping are just ideas. In the end, it is up to you as an individual to decide whether or not you are going to fill them. Best advice is that to make sure, above all else, that you are fulfilling a role you want to be fulfilling, regardless of where it fits in the idea of the society.
