PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT

Everybody needs motivation, this is what we use to get through life. We all feel down sometimes, bet let us not think that it will always be like that. Personal development makes a healthy individual. It creates a healthy relationship with oneself and with others.  First step to personal development is motivation. Get yourself motivated! You need to get into action to start achieving your personal goals. Get yourself an influential person to be inspired. Second is to expose your deepest fears because your fears will only hinder you from doing actions to achieve your goals. And with the freedom of your fears, no one can stop you from achieving your goals. Fears make you think and make you act. Third is to overcome obstacles coming to you with strength and will to go on. Also, with God's Grace. You overcome obstacles not too much in one day neither too little, it would go from inch by inch. Remember, you do not get success on a plate. You start little by little, inch by inch....

LANGUAGE BARRIER

Image
We are all not from one country, this would mean that we have different languages, beliefs and traditions. Language is a very important way of communicating because it is intrinsic to the expression of culture and as a means of communicating values, beliefs and customs. But, every state has its own language. Traveling to a country to another we can encounter different civilians with different languages. Language can be a barrier to communication. Language barrier creates difficulties in communication experienced by people speaking different languages. It could result to misunderstandings and misinterpretations to different people. Language barrier could be a trouble to people and to their everyday lives, for example if working on a foreign city with foreign language, you must learn to communicate with their language to have a successful work. Furthermore, the barrier could lead to discrimination.  Language barrier could be improved and overcome with practice and learn...

SELF-ENTITLEMENT

If you would be able to realize, millennials today have the sense of self-entitlement with them. They want work to finish early, the way they expected it to be. Moreover, they want the work to be done for them. Every millennial starts to grow impatient of all things, from little to big things. They are today full of themselves and being spoiled.  Maybe this is because of how millennials were raised and how they are expected to be in the future. With all the pressure given to them, maybe being self-entitled and impatient is the outcome. Another cause was said to be the obsession of millennials today with the ever growing social media where their need for instant gratification is intensified and with the changing nature of job market today. Also, sense of self-entitlement for millennials may have been brought by how they were raised by their parents: millennials were taught to put themselves first.  So, they brought that trait until they grow older and this could affect our...

FREEDOM / RIGHTS

Image
As soon as a person opens its eyes to the world, he/she already acquired its own human right. From where you were born, you already have right to life. In line with this, we have the right of freedom. As an individual, we have freedom of speech, expression, etc.  Freedom of expression of a person starts when it is necessary. Simple things like freedom of rejecting an offer, freedom of saying you do not want this and that, or freedom of telling everybody else that it is okay to say anything you want as long as you know where you stand and as long as you know your limitations. However, there are some people that are not granted of freedom or of any rights. This maybe because of what the society is hindering them to, or what their tradition are telling them to. Everybody should enjoy their freedom. If a man starts to harass you, you can  say "stop it" and tell them that they are being rude to you.  I would like to encourage everybody, regardless of gender, to stand ...

CATCALLING

Image
Catcalling is obviously a street harassment. As it harass, most especially, women in the streets. Some people would say catcalling happens because on what the woman is wearing. They based the urge of men to catcall in the streets because they said it is because of what the lady was wearing. Until today, this is a very wide topic being discussed and some, debated, upon.  Catcalling supposed to lower a lady's self-esteem and confidence. Catcalling is not okay.  Personally, I think nobody wants to be catcalled. Unless, a woman is very proud of her physique that being catcalled is fine. I do not mean, however, that it is wrong to feel fine when being catcalled, if you enjoy the attention, no problem. It is up to you anyway. But, being catcalled is not meant to brighten up your day, it is an obvious sign of disrespect to women. Regardless on what a woman is wearing.  Since catcalling is a form of harassment then it is more than just rudeness. In the concept of gen...

GENDER STEREOTYPING IN MEDIA

Media plays a large role in creating social norms because various forms of media are almost present everywhere in current culture. Gender roles and stereotyping exist solely because society as a whole chooses to accept them and are perpetuated by media.  On young children, gender stereotyping is being pushed through various types of media, like on advertisements, television movies, and on social media. Television is the most pervasive form of media, means that viewers must carefully examine the content of the programs they choose to watch. Actually, nothing is wrong with accepting gender roles. It is only a matter of personal choice on what you want to be or what you want to do as your daily routine. It should not be something that you feel that the society or your tradition is forcing you to do, then it is not wrong at all. The only problem with gender stereotyping is that it can cross a line and become oppressive and media is helping that grow. However, media can bring s...

GENDER STEREOTYPING

Is it really necessary?  Gender stereotypes are preconceived ideas whereby females and males are arbitrarily assigned characteristics and roles determined and limited by their gender. - Gender equality commission of the council of Europe Now let me ask you all again, is it necessary? Gender stereotyping can limit the development of the natural talents and abilities of males and females, as well as their education and professional experiences and life opportunities. Gender stereotyping can hold back the advancement of men and women. For example, traditionally female stereotype role is to marry and have children, being loving, caring, compassionate, and nurturing. Male stereotype role is to be the financial provider, assertive, competitive, independent, and holds his emotions. These sorts of stereotypes can hinder personal and professional growth. Gender stereotyping is passed from one generation to the next, could be through mouth-to-mouth socialization, from parents, ...

TOURISM 2017

2107 is the International Year of Sustainable tourism for development and in line with this, there have been numerous seminars that discussed about the importance of this year's theme. This year, tourism all over the world focuses on sustainability. But first, what is sustainable tourism ? Sustainable tourism as defined by UNWTO is "tourism that takes full account of its current and future economic, social and environmental impacts, addressing the needs of visitors, the industry, the environment and host communities." Sustainable tourism promotes preserve, sustain and respect. Sustainable tourism should make optimal use of environmental resources in the destination, respect the socio-cultural authenticity of host communities and ensure viable, long term economic operations. Promoting sustainable tourism in a destination will not be possible without the cooperation between the NGO, LGU, locals and tourists. Sustainability must be known to all, especially to the tour...

DEPRESSION

Image
Depression ( major depressive disorder) is a common and serious medical illness that negatively affects how you feel, the way you think and how you act. - American Psychiatric Association Depression is not a joke . This is a problem that should be treated seriously and carefully. Feeling depressed is not new to everybody, many people have depression and this disorder makes everyday living very difficult. There are different types of depression that have different types of outcomes, the worst with this is suicide . Depression can lead to suicide if nobody cared enough for that certain person.  Many people today suffer from depression and fortunately, it can be treated. I would like to tell everyone to at least listen or reach out to them - they maybe your friend, family member, or a stranger - because people who suffer from depression need somebody to listen to them and help them. This is one of the basic treatments to depression.  I would like t...

HEGEMONIC MASCULINITY - A Critique

By: R. W. Connell  Hegemonic masculinity was understood by Connell as external hegemony  that is connected to the institutionalization of men's dominance over women. Connell derives that understanding from the essential feminist insight that the relations between genders involve oppression and domination. However, Connell also generated hegemonic masculinity an internal hegemony  that refers to hegemony over other masculines.  It can be analyzed from the critique paper that hegemonic masculinity is rather a cultural idea  that is constantly promoted by the society through its production of masculinity practices, especially today with the use of media. And when the conditions for the production of masculinities happen, reproduction of patriarchy will occur. From the previous blog, it is true that hegemonic masculinity can indeed change over time  and will adapt accordingly if the strategies were effective. This function can be seen the society motiv...

HEGEMONIC MASCULINITY

By: R. W. Connell  Hegemonic masculinity has obviously influenced the way people and the society think of men, gender, and the social hierarchy. The hegemonic masculinity was first used as a framework to understand and study men and masculinity, until it became a subject on debates and applied to anti-violence works and revolts. Hegemonic masculinity also attracted serious criticism from sociology, psychology, etc. Even now with the use of internet, there has already been a public postings and discussions on masculinity.  From Connell's perspective, the concept of masculinity is said to rest logically on a dichotomization of sex vs gender. (Refer from the blog post earlier, difference between sex and gender is discussed). It can be analyzed from the statement of Connell that masculinity  represents not a certain type of man but, rather, a way that man position himself through different practices. Connell also said that there is a dualistic representation of mascu...

CODES OF GENDER

Recognizing someone, as male or female, is fundamental to our ability to interact with them. The difference between sex and gender has already been tackled in this blog, as well as the third-world genders. A problem to these genders is that becoming an androgyny is hard, it is hard to socialize with others without them judging you first. We must have in our knowledge that distinction of two sex and two gender is a socially created only, not a natural. Gender codes become the medium on communicating and on distinguishing genders. Today, advertisements and media have impacts on gender, as it becomes the way of communication to everyone. It shows how a woman portray softness and delicateness, and on how men portray power and control all through advertisements on magazines and etc, it also shows how men and women in there seem 'normal'. With the advertisements, it sparked the social idea that femininity, naturally a female sexuality, represents the codes of submissive, ...

"BAR BOYS"

I will dedicate this particular blog to my opinion/review on the movie entitled Bar boys . This is a Filipino movie and I'm very proud of it, and I am grateful that I had the chance to watch it. This movie gives the viewers the life of being a law student, what spices it up are the life lessons you receive after watching the movie.  Bar boys  is a movie that shows everyone how everything is done inside a law school, how pressuring it is to study law, and how your tropa  will help you get through everything. Of course the first scenes of this movie shows the best buddies trying to check if they passed entrance examinations to their law school, as time goes by 3/4 friends passed and then those three friends got into a lot of laughter, trouble, pain, and took especially a lot of risks just to pass their law school. They've been broken from their significant others, family, and most of the time they fought with each other. But at the end of the day, all they got are them...

MEDIA

Image
Media have a very important role in the world today. Media is everywhere, and most people rely on media alone. In the early centuries, audience like us are called reader . Wherein we, as the audience, are known for being passive in a way that there are no opinion from an audience that matters. Nonetheless, in our century today, audience are now called users  which means that audience are no more passive, and is now active. Wherein we, as audience, are able to reach out to others by stating our own opinions on certain matters. Also, by being known now as users, we are able to contribute contents to platforms created by media. From there, Mass Media  was produced. Defining mass media, it refers to channels of communication that involve transmitting information in some way. shape, or form to large number of people. There are two ways of communication, the one-to-many communication : where information is gathered only from one source and transmitted to everybody; and the ...

SOCIALLY ACCEPTED THIRD GENDER/SEX

There exists an account of third genders in the history of particular countries. Third gender/sex is defined as individuals that are categorized, either by themselves or by their society or culture and of their beliefs, as neither man nor woman.  This ideal is socially accepted by the society and by the whole world. However, no one can escape the negative opinions and comments about the third gender/sex. Some third gender/sex were traditions passed from one generation to another, some are being part of the third gender or sex because of their own objectives, or some would be part of the their socially accepted third gender/sex because that is the only way they could help their family and themselves.  In India, they have Hijra. Hijras are individuals born male, but they wear female clothes. There are only specific cities/provinces in India that they are able to express themselves freely because for example in the main city, Hijras are being considered low profiles. They ar...

GENDER VS SEX

Do you ever wonder, why on the profile sheets that was being given to you sometimes ask for your gender ? On other sheets you were asked for your sex ? Did you ever think "what is the difference between gender and sex?" Let me tell you simple key points between their differences. Starting form GENDER:  This is defined as the cultural construction of a person including its biological sex (male or female), psychological sex (masculinity, femininity, or androgyny), and his/her attitudes about the sexes and sexual orientation. Gender is what you obtain from your environment, or mainly from your culture, tradition, and to the norm you are used to follow. It's either in your environment you nurture  your femininity, masculinity, or maybe both of those.  SEX :  This is defined as a person's biological designation of being female or male. In some other terms, this is defined as the biological difference in genetic composition and is primarily based on a person's...

"Society still bars women from becoming successful leaders"

Through ages, this has been a popular discussion for many debates especially when feminism is the main topic. Now the question is, does the society still bars women from becoming successful leaders? Now that we are in the 21st century, much have changed. 20 years ago is different from this year, all the beliefs, traditions, and the norms have changed as well. If women aren't recognized before, which includes their rights and roles, today there exists female leaders that are truly successful. Today women now have their complete rights. Today women are able to fight back to those that makes them weak, today women are able to stand up independently. With all these, women of today are able to rise up and lead. Lead her own family, lead her own town, lead her own organization, or even her own country, because women today simply can .  There are countries today that are led by women, successfully like how men leads. It is a fact that men are stronger than women when it comes to ...

FEMINIST MOVEMENT

Women suffrage were well known in the early 19th century and it is defined as women's right to vote, it is one way for women to gain a voice in that time where they were still being considered as child-bearers and homemakers only. In 1903, with the Association of Ilonga Feminists by Pura Villanueva Kalaw raised the call for women's suffrage until 1928, where American suffragettes Mrs. Carie Chapman Catt and Aleta Jacobs organized an association focused on civic works, the campaign between two American suffragettes together with local women was regularized by the National League of Filipino Women and the Women’s Citizen’s League. Not until 1937 where women in the Philippines have fully exercised their right to vote. In comparison to the 1st wave in the feminist movement that happened in 19th to early 20th century, suffragettes in UK and in US were still fighting for their rights to vote. Women in the early 18th century in the Philippines were still not given the opportunity...

FEMINISM

Many people, especially women, know the definition of feminism but doesn't fully understand its sense. Some would even fight for feminism bearing with them false knowledge that women are greater than men. Feminism shouldn't be viewed as female supremacy, it shouldn't be viewed as advocating superiority or inferiority, feminism should be seen as advocating equality regardless of gender. Feminism is not "women can do better", it is "women can do the same". Feminism should be concerned for both sides. The fight for feminism started a long way back, and it is already the 21st century and it seems that gender equality hasn't made its way yet to some people today.  Feminism is a movement that arose a long time ago and it focuses on the gender inequality issues that impact women. I believe that if one would be a feminist, he/she must have the accurate knowledge of what they would be fighting for. Unlike other women proclaiming that they are feminists ...
